Modern Monograms and Embroidered Text, June 27

Modern Monograms and Embroidered Text, June 27
Join me for this fun and practical workshop live online. We’ll talk about the tradition of monograms, embroidered text in folk textiles, fashion, and contemporary art, and embroider a letter using the shadow work technique, a style used traditionally in Lucknow, India. We’ll also look at asemic writing and ways to work with language and abstraction.
Image 5 shows student work from a recent class and the last image is my abstract piece.
Materials needed:
Fabric: cotton or linen. It’s all the better to use a pillowcase, blouse, handkerchief, or an item at home that you’d like to embellish. The shadow work technique looks best with lightweight translucent fabric like cotton voile, batiste, or muslin; organza, or chiffon.
Crewel, chenille, or embroidery needle (embroidery needles are best for working on fine light-weight fabric- light fabric= smaller needle).
Six-stranded embroidery floss or perle cotton no. 8
Water-soluble embroidery pen or graphite pencil
Scissors
I will email the class pdf and Zoom link on Thursday before we meet. You are welcome to trace a letter in a favorite font or hand-draw a letter on fabric in advance.
