Hungarian Written Embroidery - Írásos Level I, Mar. 8
Hungarian Written Embroidery - Írásos Level I, Mar. 8
Learn the basic stitches of Hungarian written embroidery, a folk style that originated in Transylvania, Romania in the 18th century. While floral patterns resemble Turkish motifs brought by the Ottoman rule in the 15- and 1600s, they can be interpreted as the tree of life, the snake, the sun, and other symbols shared all over the world. The forms are repeated to create symmetrical patterns on clothing and home textiles in a thick stitched line resembling a cord.
Fewer and fewer women are still stitching today in the area where it originated. Sarah will share her knowledge of the technique, history, and culture of Kalotaszeg embroidery and clothing. She has been visiting the region since 2012.
Challenging for beginners and experienced embroiderers, you’ll learn the foundation stitch as well as accent stitches and edgings. Embroider a pattern that you can use to create a small pillow or incorporate into a garment or a larger textile piece.
We’ll meet online using Zoom.
