Gather and Stitch: Portugal — A Cultural Textile Retreat

Embroidery Retreat in a village near Viana do Castelo, Portugal
7 Nights in a farmhouse built in 1892 with beautiful gardens in a village of 4000 people outside of Viana do Castelo.
Stitch by the fountain and hydrangeas and pick a piece of fruit from the tree.
Daily stitching practice, workshop with a local certified artisan embroiderer, museum and studio visits, countryside vinho verde and olive oil tastings, day trip to Porto, and an annual festival parade with over 600 women in traditional costume. Optional workshops in local ethnographic crafts palmitos (woven palm ornaments) and locally-sourced natural dyeing???
Embroidery materials will be provided but feel free to bring your favorite supplies, project in progress, or any portable/packable magnifying or lighting equipment (plus electric plug converters) that you use.
Non-stitching spouses or partners are welcome, too. The farm property is a wonderful place to read, write, relax, and take a break from regular life in between our delicious meals and outings.
Traditional meals served at the farmhouse as well as meals out in Ponte de Lima, Porto, and Viana do Castelo. Prepare yourself for delicious seafood, cheese, bread, and wine.
We have several double and single occupancy rooms, each with their own bathroom. Each room has double bed(s). Bring a friend or we will pair you up with another guest. Invite your spouse or partner or choose a enjoy a room all to yourself.

Saturday, August 10
1:00 Meet in Lisbon for bus ride to the Minho region. Welcome dinner in ____. Arrive at the farmhouse and get settled.
Sunday, August 11
Breakfast at the house. Morning daily stitching practice. Introduction to the textiles of the region. Lunch at the house. Village walk/rest.
Monday, August 12
Breakfast at the house. Ponte de Lima: morning visit to traditional weaver’s studio. Maria grows, prepares and weaves linen from seed.
Lunch in Ponte de Lima, walk around town, (visit garden?), wine tasting at vineyard nearby, olive oil tasting…. Dinner at the house.
Evening daily stitching practice.
Tuesday, August 13
Breakfast at the house. Embroidery workshop with Fatima and her mother. Lunch at the house. Visit Isilda Parente.
Dinner at the house (or cafe in Perre?) Evening stitching practice.
Wednesday, August 14
Breakfast at the house. Day trip to Porto. Tile-covered buildings, old churches, Serralves, shops. Lunch there.
Light dinner at the house. Evening stitching practice.
Thursday, August 15
Breakfast at the house. Morning daily stitching practice. Lunch at the house. Optional palmitos workshop/ time for a walk, rest.
Dinner at the house.
Friday, August 16
Breakfast at the house. Viano do Castelo. Walk in town. Costume Museum. Find our spot for the Mordomias parade that starts at 4:00. Special closing dinner out. Evening stitching practice or relax.
Saturday, August 17
Breakfast at the house. Finish packing. Bus back to Lisbon. Say goodbye or continue your stay in Portugal on your own.
